SUMMARY:Summer Challenge Week 6 - Plastic!
DESCRIPTION:We have reached the last of our 6 Summer Challenges! How did you get on reducing your car journeys last week? this week we are looking at plastic pollution. 88% of the ocean surface is polluted with plastic\, but even more surprisingly this only accounts for 1% of ocean plastic waste! 700 species are at risk of extinction due to ocean plastic pollution. What can we do about this? This week we challenge you to pick an area of beach or parkland close to you\, and do a litter pick. It might surprise you what you find. Send us a photo of what you find\, and remember the following top tips:\n\n\nTop tips for picking litter:\n\n\n✅Be prepared: Carry gardening gloves with you (or a litter picker if you have one!) when you’re heading out on a walk in case you spot any litter – they’ll protect your hands from anything mucky or sharp. \n\n\n✅If you don’t think you’ll come across a bin\, bring a bag so you can carry any litter away with you.\n\n\n✅Stay safe by staying away from needles and not picking up anything with human waste (like nappies)\, electrical items\, or holding any potentially dangerous chemicals. \n\n\n✅If you’re not sure what it is\, don’t pick it up. Take extra care when picking up anything sharp.\n\n\n✅Report any of the above items\, anything you think might be dangerous\, or any dumped electrical items or paint to the local council or landowner. \n\n\n✅If you come across a fly-tipping site\, or a dead animal\, report it.\n\n\n✅Sort your haul: Instead of chucking it in a regular bin\, you could go one further and separate what you’ve collected to be recycled!\n\n\n✅If possible\, safety-proof anything you find that could be a danger to wildlife if it ends up in the wrong place further down the line\, for example\, cutting up 6-pack rings or plastic bottle cap rings.\n\n\n✅Wash your hands: Always make sure you wash your hands properly after picking litter!

SUMMARY:Summer Challenge Week 5 - Reducing Car Journeys
DESCRIPTION:Summer Challenge week 5\, this week we are challenging you\, not to make something\, but to change your behaviour in a way that helps the environment. The average family car produces 310g of CO2 into the air for each mile they drive. We would like to challenge everyone to reduce their carbon footprint by reducing the amount they travel by car. Whether you swap a car journey for public transport; reduce the length of your car journey by parking up early and walking/cycling/scooting the rest of the way; or car share to reduce the number of cars on the road\, we would like everyone to change just one journey this week. Don’t forget to send us your photo of your new way of travelling!

SUMMARY:Summer Challenge - Week 4 - Eco-Campaign!
DESCRIPTION:Summer Challenge week 4. How is it going – don’t forget to send us your bee drinking station photos from last week. This week we challenge you to follow in the footsteps of John Muir\, and design a poster for an eco-cause you are passionate about. \n\n\nAre you tired of cars sitting outside your school with their engines running?\n\n\nWould you like more people to give part of their garden back to nature and let it grow wild?\n\n\nMaybe you think there should be more green space in the middle of your town?\n\n\nWhatever your cause\, design an eye catching poster to get your message across. We’d love to see your finished works of art!

SUMMARY:Summer Challenge - Week 3 - Bees!
DESCRIPTION:For week 3 of our Summer challenge – we are looking at Bees.\nAlmost 90% of wildflowers and 75% of global crops rely on animal pollination. that means the one third of our food supply relies on natural pollinators such as bees.\nIf you find a bumblebee which appears to be struggling\, it may be that it is just resting\, particularly if the bee is a queen in early spring. If you think the bee is struggling the best thing to do is gently put the bee onto a bee-friendly flower. If there are no bee-friendly flowers around\, mix 50/50 white sugar and water to give the bumblebee a one-off energy boost\, providing the carbohydrates it needs to fly. Simply offer a drop or two of sugar water up to the front end of the bee on a teaspoon or an upturned drinks cap in a sheltered place and allow the bee time to recuperate.\nYour challenge this week is to create a bee drinking station for your outdoor space or windowsill. Don’t forget to send us your photos!
