SUMMARY:Where The Light Enters You: exploring loss and longing in local landscape\, with words and images by Vicky Allen
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is a search for hope amidst the lament around our changing climate and how it is impacting us. From contemplating a changing landscape to noticing the small beauties found all around us\, art and words combine to invite us to be attentive to our shared environment with a particular and very local focus. \nThe title of the exhibition is drawn from Rumi’s famous poem: \nI said: what about my eyes?\nHe said: Keep them on the road. \nI said: What about my passion?\nHe said: Keep it burning. \nI said: What about my heart?\nHe said: Tell me what you hold inside it? \nI said: Pain and sorrow.\nHe said: Stay with it. The wound is the place where the Light enters you.

SUMMARY:City Slickers in a Smart Countryside
DESCRIPTION:We are opening back up for the summer with a photography exhibition of images taken along the John Muir Way by Sharon McMenemy Khan/4 Pegs Gallery. Celebrating 10 years of the John Muir Way. \n“When you’re preparing for the John Muir Way\, you focus on navigating: distances\, signposts\, gradients. Once you start riding along the path\, you begin to relax and enjoy the countryside. You disconnect from everyday life and connect with the history of the people and the place. It’s a heart-warming journey that connects you to nature.” \nThe photographs are taken at different viewpoints from Falkirk to Dunbar.

SUMMARY:Textile Craftivism: Reflections on the Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:“Craftivism” uses craft to send a message – to make people stop and reflect on a particular topic. Craftivism can be done anywhere by anyone. \nIn 2021\, people from Scotland and all over Britain and other countries\, made fabric panels of patchwork\, appliqué\, felting\, knitting\, crochet\, embroidery and more. When joined together\, these created a 1.5 km long “scarf” which was displayed on Glasgow Green during COP 26. \nThe scarf was used to convey key environmental messages to persuade leaders and elected representatives (at local\, national and global levels) to act in a serious and committed way to reduce carbon emissions\, research carbon sequestration and make firm commitments and laws to combat the increasing threat of climate change and help ensure the survival of earth and life as we know it. \nThe significance of 1.5 km was that\, at the International Climate Conference in Paris in 2015\, it was agreed that a 1.5°C temperature rise above pre-industrial levels\, was the maximum possible to avoid a catastrophic and irreversible global warming crisis caused by human activity. \nThe people who created these panels feel passionately that our current way of life\, with models of excessive consumption and continual economic growth\, together with the global and local inequalities\, cause significant damage to the planet. They see little genuine national or global commitment or action to change things. They are however\, heartened that locally there are some great projects and individuals that help mitigate the effects of the climate crisis and contribute to a more positive future. \nThese panels are taken on tour by their creators to engage people in discussion about the climate crisis. This form of “craftivism” is a small gesture\, raising awareness while encouraging and supporting others to think and act for positive change. We are very pleased to be displaying some of the panels at John Muir’s Birthplace from 14th – 28th October. \nTo find out more about this mass craftivism project take a look at the Stitches for Survival website. \nWe are also pleased to be displaying a garment that was part of the ‘Rebellious Threads’ project. \nRebellious Threads was “an intensive 2 year up-cycling project in collaboration with the Dunbar schools\, North Light Arts and Sustaining Dunbar. This exciting project will integrate with the whole curriculum and utilise the skills of various local professionals to deliver long lasting impacts on the consumption habits\, not only of the pupils but of the whole community. \nRebellious Threads mission is to slow down fast fashion by swapping not shopping\, creating\, remaking\, choosing and reusing\, caring and repairing.”

SUMMARY:Leaves of Auchencraw
DESCRIPTION:“It is my challenge and my pleasure every time I print to see where the journey takes me. With this exhibition I invite you to join me on my journey: Leaves of Auchencraw. Every day\, from spring to autumn\, I have wandered and walked Auchencraw and the local area picking just enough leaves for printing each day. I then return home to print and dye on fabric I have acquired. I try to use end-of-line stock\, old household linen and upcycled garments when I can\, as well as printing on paper. Thank you for joining me and I hope you enjoy my journey too.” \nSarah Wakefield is a New Zealander living in Auchencrow in the Scottish Borders. \nSarah has enjoyed fabrics\, embroidery and textiles from an early age\, influenced by both her mother and grandmother’s work with textiles in dressmaking and soft furnishings. Sarah has always tried to make most of her own clothes and soft furnishings for her home\, alongside having a garden for pleasure and produce. As a single mother of two busy boys\, life and budgets made the repurposing of clothes and fabrics from friends\, family or second-hand shops a necessity. Alongside there was always the dream of designing and printing her own fabric using natural fibres and dyes. \nIn one of life’s unforseeable twists\, when an injury meant Sarah could no longer work in industry\, it  created the time to learn about printing leaves and flowers using natural dyes on natural fibres. It’s a process that uses Sarah’s knowledge and love of chemistry\, and felt like natural progression in her life. For Sarah mental health and isolating herself from the world were an on-going issue with her injury. Her journey into eco and botanical printing on fabric and paper has been good for her health\, well being and soul.

SUMMARY:John Muir\, Earth\, Planet Universe
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition focuses on John Muir’s legacy and his role as an environmental activist and successful campaigner and his relevance for our situation today in addressing the climate crisis. However\, we have paused to reflect on the content of the exhibition in the light of the current COVID-19 crisis. There are certain parallels between what are both global existential crises. Perhaps the pandemic may help us to understand the ties that bind us on a global scale\, the fragility of our economic systems and how vulnerable they leave so many people and the inadequacy of our response to the even greater threat of climate crisis? Even though climate change presents a slower\, more long-term health threat\, an equally dramatic and much more sustained shift in ways of life and economic\, political and social structures will be needed to prevent irreversible damage. \nIt has been interesting to see how relevant many of the themes being explored in the exhibition are also relevant to COVID-19\, for example\, the greater impact of both crises on the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world. However\, both also present an opportunity to reflect on what is actually important for our wellbeing and the sort of future we want to create. John Muir had a lot to say on our need for nature as an essential element for our mental health and spiritual nourishment. \nThe exhibition was always intended to be a catalyst to a series of events and activities over the summer\, in conjunction with other groups. How we do this will now have to change and we are exploring other ways to engage with and highlight the incredible range of existing community-led activity in our area. \nWe want to ask – ‘What if?’ questions to spark people’s imaginations for a positive vision for the Dunbar and East Linton ward in the context of the climate emergency. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Gardens of East Lothian
DESCRIPTION:Photographic exhibition by Sheila Sim. \nOver the next few days we hope to bring some of this exhibition to you virtually\, please keep following our Facebook and Twitter feeds! \nEast Lothian has a long and proud heritage of gardening\, and has produced several horticultural pioneers. With its good climate and fertile soil\, the county has often been called ‘the garden of Scotland’. Featuring private and public gardens\, parks and designed landscapes from across the county\, this exhibition showcases East Lothian in all its horticultural glory. There is something here for everyone – from the historical to the highly contemporary\, from grand and stately to modest and cosy. \n \n  \n  \nAmisfield Walled Garden which lies on the outskirts of Haddington. It dates back to the late 18th century and is one of the largest walled gardens in Scotland. It originally belonged to the Earl of Wemyss but was sold to Haddington Town Council in 1969 and subsequently fell into neglect. In 2013 it became a community garden managed by the Amisfield Preservation Trust and a large band of volunteers\, who have recreated the original network of paths and are developing each sector of the garden with a different character. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nThe garden at Broadwoodside\, near Gifford\, is planted in and around a farm steading rescued from dereliction. The writer Kenneth Cox describes it as “one of Scotland’s most exciting contemporary private gardens\, with excellent structure\, imaginative use of objects and some of the most eye-catching planting in Scotland”. Pictured here is the inner courtyard with aviary.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Faces of Dunbar
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by local photographer\, Fraser Stewart. \nThis exhibition is a range of my photographic work of the many facets of Dunbar. It is a study of the diverse communities within a small coastal town. Dunbar is surrounded by beautiful nature and is a joy to explore and live in. Yet it is the people who provide the dynamic of the town\, creating employment\, starting up organisations and social groups. This exhibition captures all aspects of this unique community.

SUMMARY:John Muir\, Writer
DESCRIPTION:In 2014 Dunbar-born John Muir\, botanist\, geologist\, explorer\, mountaineer and conservationist\, became the 38th Scot to be commemorated in Writers’ Court in Edinburgh. His flagstone carries the words: “I care to live only to entice people to look at Nature’s loveliness.” Muir was convinced that only then would folk protect the environment.\nMuir sought to persuade people through his writings – letters\, journals\, articles for newspapers and magazines\, and twelve books. The quill pen became his sword in the battle for conservation. Friends’ of John Muir’s Birthplace new exhibition\, ‘John Muir\, Writer’\, tells how it came about.

SUMMARY:John Muir in the French Pyrenees
DESCRIPTION:A powerpoint exhibition about John Muir and the origin of the first American National Parks in the French Pyrenees!\nThe panels of this exhibition were done last school year by nine sixteen-year-old pupils from Jean Dupuy High School in Tarbes with the help of a history and geography teacher and myself. Tarbes is situated in the south west of France\, very near to the Pyrenees National Park.\nI have been teaching English in this school for three years. Being a wild place lover\, I have come regularly to Scotland since I was a French assistant near Stirling twenty-nine years ago. The idea of an exhibition in the French Pyrenees National Park premises came from my belief that my pupils could be interested in John Muir’s biography and contribute to make his life and the story of the first national parks in the world known in the Pyrenees. It was a great opportunity for me to teach important parts of American History such as Native American culture\, colonization\, the myth of the Frontier… We also talked about the emergence of the first ecological movement in 19th century USA with the influence of artists and scientists on public opinion and on politicians\, which all led to the creation of the first national parks. John Muir Muir’s life and actions were thoroughly presented. I dealt with all these themes with some of my classes and nine pupils volunteered to do some panels. Adèle\, Adèle-Nadja\, Blandine\, Camille\, Corentin\, Elodie\, Estelle\, Hamidou\, Lila worked in their free time with our help. For John Muir’s biography\, we made use of some books and documents I got at JMB when I first went there nearly ten years ago.\nJMB website and Jo Moulin’s help were also very precious to achieve our work. We are also thankful to American National Parks staffs who sent to us very nice posters.\nThis exhibition was first displayed last May in Gavarnie Maison du Parc. Gavarnie is situated in the mountains near Tarbes and is also famous for its UNESCO site. Then\, last September\, we had the wonderful opportunity to have it displayed during the Europarc Conference in Aviemore.\nAt a time when environmental issues are in the frontlines again\, I think it is very important that young people know about John Muir. The pupils perceived him as an example of perseverance\, talent and resilience. Learning about his intense and fruitful life can encourage each of them to play their unique part and reminds us all that a single person can have a tremendous influence in the course of things. It is now a great honour for us to be given the opportunity to show you our work in his native home … Many thanks to JMB staff.\nDominique Marabèse

SUMMARY:'Silva' by Chris Thomas
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to present ‘Silva: a meditation on trees and woods in eleven photographs’ by photographer Chris Thomas. 20th February – 24th March. \nHumankind has had an intimate relationship with trees and woodland since the days of our earliest ancestors – on the one hand\, practical and prosaic\, on another\, a deeply-felt sense of their intrinsic value as living things\, expressed spiritually by some. The importance of trees and woodland as part of a sustainable\, richly-biodiverse and resilient future environments is well-recognised\, but our attachment goes beyond this: trees and woodland are just as important to us psychologically and physically\, simply by being.\n Arising from his own fascination with trees and woodlands\, Chris’s sequence of black and white film photographs seeks to invite visitors to the exhibition simply to reflect upon the ‘being’ of trees and woods: their ‘essence’ expressed in their architectures\, textures and forms\, the way they create light and shade and space\, how these phenomena change daily\, or through the seasons – and how we respond ourselves\, consciously or subliminally\, to our trees and woodlands.

SUMMARY:New Exhibition - 'Flora' by Cathy Bell
DESCRIPTION:Look out for our exciting first exhibition of 2019.  From 5 January until 16 February\, we are proud to host artist Cathy Bell’s solo show\, ‘flora’. \nIn her exhibition of artwork and photography Cathy Bell is concerned with capturing a personal connection with the natural world of “flora”. For paintings she has chosen to depict plants\, flowers and trees which mean something to her personally and also for their shape\, line and colour. She is not interested in rendering a realistic likeness\, however\, she does endeavour to capture an image which is true to the essence and spirit of the subject. Her photographs are similar in that they are not created with technical merit in mind. Rather\, they are derived from an instinctive connection with the subject\, some of the photographs are enhanced to heighten the mood\, thereby\, altering the aesthetic. In all of the work on display she tries to follow John Muir’s advice to “keep close to nature’s heart”.

SUMMARY:Inspired by John Muir
DESCRIPTION:This wonderful selection of photos are the winning entries of a joint competition run by John Muir’s Birthplace and the Facebook group Dunbar in Pictures. The photography competition was open to all photographers\, professional and amateur alike. \n  \nThe brief encouraged photographers to take time to look at the landscapes around Dunbar and the fine detail in nature that inspired John Muir as a child growing up in Dunbar. Photos of anything from landscapes to macro shots of nature\, or people enjoying outdoor Dunbar were all welcome so long as they were taken within the geographical zone of Dunbar (boundaries are: Seacliff / Tantallon Castle in the west\, Pease Bay / Cove in the east\, and the Lammermuirs out to Garvald to the south) or a picture of Dunbar taken from across the Firth in Fife or from the top of North Berwick Law. \n  \nSpecial thanks to Gaynor Smith who helped conceive and administrate the project and all the participating photographers.
