SUMMARY:Flight Disruption
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is a collection of prints of wild British birds that are impacted by climate change. Climate change is affecting our birds in many ways: warming seas impact the food chain\, rising sea levels change the geography of where birds can breed and lay eggs\, bad weather can make it hard to find food and feed young and extreme temperatures can make survival difficult. Numbers of British birds are predicted to fall drastically over the coming years. The exhibition features original\, hand-pulled\, linocut prints of birds seen along the coast of East Lothian. Many of the birds featured are impacted in some way by climate change and are either on the red or amber list of the BTO Birds of Conservation Concern in the UK. \nWork by Caroline Convey\, a Scottish wildlife artist working in lino to make reduction prints.

SUMMARY:Duir: oak : door
DESCRIPTION:Duir\noak : door \nThis exhibition explores and celebrates the remaining woodlands found in East Lothian with their pockets of old oak trees. As artists we are working to highlight our dependence and necessary engagement with our environment and woodland through foraging\, creating\, learning and being amongst woodland for mindfulness and creative work. \nThe title of our exhibition is Duir which is an old Celtic word for oak and where the word for door derives. Oak supports more wildlife than any other tree species. This highlights the biodiversity value associated with them. They are also long-lived making them significant carbon stores. Woodlands are an essential part of our community and our exhibition highlights the necessity of preservation and regeneration. \nThe three artists contributing to this are Karin Chipulina\, Stella Robertson and Anna Davis. \nKarin Chipulina’s work includes eco printed cloth\, dyed with local leaves from the woods using oak gall mordants\, natural fibres\, prints using local woodland\, foraged materials and cloth sewn\, dyed and worked on with plant fibre. ‘Within a woodland we can access free materials to use in different art forms. We can learn from working in that space of inspiration and use materials consciously to give a voice through our art’. \nStella Robertson’s photographs document the final stage of a performance/ritual called ‘Land Listenings’ where she works through grief with and for the land. The stones represent the loss and are carried on a ‘pilgrimage to uncertainty’ led by movement and sound of trees\, animals\, light and her own intuitions. This process transforms the tight grip of suffering into a more open\, light and alive state. Facilitating the letting go of loss through placing it to rest in the generous arms of trees. Letting go of suffering is a radically creative action that allows us to see other possibilities. \nFor this exhibition Anna Davis’s work incorporates the use of traditional oak gall ink for drawing and sketching\, in which she responds to some of the remaining oak woods in East Lothian. She is looking at our necessary engagement and appreciation of ancient woodland and touches on the old stories and wildlife that are connected to our woods. She brings poems\, drawing and observations together into book form\, and the process is in itself a waybook referencing the ideas of geopoetics. \nA quote by John Muir: ‘Between every two pine trees there is a door\, leading to a new way of life.’ \n

SUMMARY:Where The Light Enters You: exploring loss and longing in local landscape\, with words and images by Vicky Allen
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is a search for hope amidst the lament around our changing climate and how it is impacting us. From contemplating a changing landscape to noticing the small beauties found all around us\, art and words combine to invite us to be attentive to our shared environment with a particular and very local focus. \nThe title of the exhibition is drawn from Rumi’s famous poem: \nI said: what about my eyes?\nHe said: Keep them on the road. \nI said: What about my passion?\nHe said: Keep it burning. \nI said: What about my heart?\nHe said: Tell me what you hold inside it? \nI said: Pain and sorrow.\nHe said: Stay with it. The wound is the place where the Light enters you.

SUMMARY:City Slickers in a Smart Countryside
DESCRIPTION:We are opening back up for the summer with a photography exhibition of images taken along the John Muir Way by Sharon McMenemy Khan/4 Pegs Gallery. Celebrating 10 years of the John Muir Way. \n“When you’re preparing for the John Muir Way\, you focus on navigating: distances\, signposts\, gradients. Once you start riding along the path\, you begin to relax and enjoy the countryside. You disconnect from everyday life and connect with the history of the people and the place. It’s a heart-warming journey that connects you to nature.” \nThe photographs are taken at different viewpoints from Falkirk to Dunbar.

Craftivism can be done anywhere by anyone. \nIn 2021\, people from Scotland and all over Britain and other countries\, made fabric panels of patchwork\, appliqué\, felting\, knitting\, crochet\, embroidery and more. When joined together\, these created a 1.5 km long “scarf” which was displayed on Glasgow Green during COP 26. \nThe scarf was used to convey key environmental messages to persuade leaders and elected representatives (at local\, national and global levels) to act in a serious and committed way to reduce carbon emissions\, research carbon sequestration and make firm commitments and laws to combat the increasing threat of climate change and help ensure the survival of earth and life as we know it. \nThe significance of 1.5 km was that\, at the International Climate Conference in Paris in 2015\, it was agreed that a 1.5°C temperature rise above pre-industrial levels\, was the maximum possible to avoid a catastrophic and irreversible global warming crisis caused by human activity. \nThe people who created these panels feel passionately that our current way of life\, with models of excessive consumption and continual economic growth\, together with the global and local inequalities\, cause significant damage to the planet. They see little genuine national or global commitment or action to change things. They are however\, heartened that locally there are some great projects and individuals that help mitigate the effects of the climate crisis and contribute to a more positive future. \nThese panels are taken on tour by their creators to engage people in discussion about the climate crisis. This form of “craftivism” is a small gesture\, raising awareness while encouraging and supporting others to think and act for positive change. We are very pleased to be displaying some of the panels at John Muir’s Birthplace from 14th – 28th October. \nTo find out more about this mass craftivism project take a look at the Stitches for Survival website. \nWe are also pleased to be displaying a garment that was part of the ‘Rebellious Threads’ project. \nRebellious Threads was “an intensive 2 year up-cycling project in collaboration with the Dunbar schools\, North Light Arts and Sustaining Dunbar. This exciting project will integrate with the whole curriculum and utilise the skills of various local professionals to deliver long lasting impacts on the consumption habits\, not only of the pupils but of the whole community. \nRebellious Threads mission is to slow down fast fashion by swapping not shopping\, creating\, remaking\, choosing and reusing\, caring and repairing.”

SUMMARY:Leaves of Auchencraw
DESCRIPTION:“It is my challenge and my pleasure every time I print to see where the journey takes me. With this exhibition I invite you to join me on my journey: Leaves of Auchencraw. Every day\, from spring to autumn\, I have wandered and walked Auchencraw and the local area picking just enough leaves for printing each day. I then return home to print and dye on fabric I have acquired. I try to use end-of-line stock\, old household linen and upcycled garments when I can\, as well as printing on paper. Thank you for joining me and I hope you enjoy my journey too.” \nSarah Wakefield is a New Zealander living in Auchencrow in the Scottish Borders. \nSarah has enjoyed fabrics\, embroidery and textiles from an early age\, influenced by both her mother and grandmother’s work with textiles in dressmaking and soft furnishings. Sarah has always tried to make most of her own clothes and soft furnishings for her home\, alongside having a garden for pleasure and produce. As a single mother of two busy boys\, life and budgets made the repurposing of clothes and fabrics from friends\, family or second-hand shops a necessity. Alongside there was always the dream of designing and printing her own fabric using natural fibres and dyes. \nIn one of life’s unforseeable twists\, when an injury meant Sarah could no longer work in industry\, it  created the time to learn about printing leaves and flowers using natural dyes on natural fibres. It’s a process that uses Sarah’s knowledge and love of chemistry\, and felt like natural progression in her life. For Sarah mental health and isolating herself from the world were an on-going issue with her injury. Her journey into eco and botanical printing on fabric and paper has been good for her health\, well being and soul.

SUMMARY:John Muir\, Earth\, Planet Universe
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition focuses on John Muir’s legacy and his role as an environmental activist and successful campaigner and his relevance for our situation today in addressing the climate crisis. However\, we have paused to reflect on the content of the exhibition in the light of the current COVID-19 crisis. There are certain parallels between what are both global existential crises. Perhaps the pandemic may help us to understand the ties that bind us on a global scale\, the fragility of our economic systems and how vulnerable they leave so many people and the inadequacy of our response to the even greater threat of climate crisis? Even though climate change presents a slower\, more long-term health threat\, an equally dramatic and much more sustained shift in ways of life and economic\, political and social structures will be needed to prevent irreversible damage. \nIt has been interesting to see how relevant many of the themes being explored in the exhibition are also relevant to COVID-19\, for example\, the greater impact of both crises on the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world. However\, both also present an opportunity to reflect on what is actually important for our wellbeing and the sort of future we want to create. John Muir had a lot to say on our need for nature as an essential element for our mental health and spiritual nourishment. \nThe exhibition was always intended to be a catalyst to a series of events and activities over the summer\, in conjunction with other groups. How we do this will now have to change and we are exploring other ways to engage with and highlight the incredible range of existing community-led activity in our area. \nWe want to ask – ‘What if?’ questions to spark people’s imaginations for a positive vision for the Dunbar and East Linton ward in the context of the climate emergency. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Gardens of East Lothian
DESCRIPTION:Photographic exhibition by Sheila Sim. \nOver the next few days we hope to bring some of this exhibition to you virtually\, please keep following our Facebook and Twitter feeds! \nEast Lothian has a long and proud heritage of gardening\, and has produced several horticultural pioneers. With its good climate and fertile soil\, the county has often been called ‘the garden of Scotland’. Featuring private and public gardens\, parks and designed landscapes from across the county\, this exhibition showcases East Lothian in all its horticultural glory. There is something here for everyone – from the historical to the highly contemporary\, from grand and stately to modest and cosy. \n \n  \n  \nAmisfield Walled Garden which lies on the outskirts of Haddington. It dates back to the late 18th century and is one of the largest walled gardens in Scotland. It originally belonged to the Earl of Wemyss but was sold to Haddington Town Council in 1969 and subsequently fell into neglect. In 2013 it became a community garden managed by the Amisfield Preservation Trust and a large band of volunteers\, who have recreated the original network of paths and are developing each sector of the garden with a different character. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nThe garden at Broadwoodside\, near Gifford\, is planted in and around a farm steading rescued from dereliction. The writer Kenneth Cox describes it as “one of Scotland’s most exciting contemporary private gardens\, with excellent structure\, imaginative use of objects and some of the most eye-catching planting in Scotland”. Pictured here is the inner courtyard with aviary.
